Tobacco seeds are extremely small (not much larger than a pin prick) and care should be taken when sowing so as not to sow to thickly. Tobacco seeds require a warm temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius for germination. Seeds should be germinated indoors before transplanting, with the ideal growing time being from September to May. 

Start by sprinkling the tobacco seed onto the surface of a sterile seed raising mix and lightly water in using a fine mist. Cover your seed tray with a clear plastic cover. DO NOT use dirt from your garden, and DO NOT cover the seed with any soil, as they need light for germination. Covering can slow down germination time, or if covered too deeply, the seed won't germinate at all. Watering in lightly is all that is needed.

Seeds will begin to germinate in approximately 7 - 10 days, but if your seeds don't germinate right away, be patient. It can take up to 2 weeks for some tobacco seeds to germinate.

The seed raising mix should be kept moist, but not soggy, and should never be allowed to dry out completely. Care should be taken when watering freshly emerging tobacco seedlings because the force of the water can uproot the tiny seedlings causing them to die. The best way to water seedlings is from the bottom, and the way to do this (if you are using trays with holes in the bottom) is by sitting the container with the seedlings in it, in a tray of water for a short period of time so the soil mix can draw it up.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question:
My seeds won't germinate. Why not?

Answer:
Normally, a shortcut in the germination process is to blame. Either not keeping the growing medium moist at all times or using a harsh watering method (a fine puff spray must be used). When raising from seed, tobacco is not very tolerant to wind, overwatering, underwatering, too much sun etc so ensure they are kept in a warm, semi shaded location and keep the mix moist, topping up daily. Use a quality, weed-free, seed raising mix.

Question:
Can I receive a refund if I cannot get my seeds to germinate?

Answer:
Generally a refund is not possible for non-germination. Our seeds are sourced from a local NZ grower who plants and harvests tobacco plants each year. He uses the same seeds we sell, to grow batches throughout the year, to test germination rates. If you feel that your seeds are to blame for non germination you can return the balance of seeds from your pack to us and we will have them tested. This will take a couple of weeks and if our testing returns the same results we will issue you with replacement product or a full refund.

Question:
I thought NZ was going smoke-free. Is it legal to grow your own tobacco?

Answer:
It is perfectly legal to buy and sell tobacco seeds. It is also perfectly legal to grow and smoke your own tobacco.

Question:
Can I give my mates some tobacco to help them save money?

Answer:
No. It is ILLEGAL to sell or distribute home grown tobacco as a finished product.
